I am a manbo asogwe, an initiated priestess of Vodou. I was initiated in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and see myself as serving Bondye—the force of all goodness, the Ancestors, and the intermediary and ancestral spirits, the lwa. I honor the legacy and Ancestry that I access through my Haitian Papa’s lineage. I do not see myself as a witch or Wiccan or even pagan, though the lwa are seated in the natural forces around us. They are the natural forces that sustain us, the Ancestors who stand behind us, and the spiritual guides who lead us forward. I recognize an Invisible realm of spirit that informs, interacts with, and influences the visible world.

Vodou ceremonies are a technology for opening the door between these worlds and inviting spiritual powers to interact with us. There are themes of resistance and redistribution of power inherent in the act of accessing and inviting invisible sources of power out into the physical. It was so for enslaved people: in spite of their bodies being in hell, the life force itself could reach out to them, for those who had eyes to see into the Invisible.
